STAR CITY WHITETAILS SPRING GOBBLER OF THE YEAR WINNER...JORDAN MUSSELMAN

Although Jordan Musselman of Christiansburg Virginia is only 9 years old she is already an extremely accomplished outdoors girl. Jordan began her hunting career at the early age of 3 when she started tagging along on hunts with her parents Darrell and Melissa Musselman.

To date Jordan has harvested 8 deer including a great 9 point buck she took last season with a rifle at 170yrds. She is also well versed at trapping, bird hunting & fishing. Matter of fact Jordan has 3 saltwater citations to her credit.

Now let's talk about Jordan's Turkey Talent......

In 2010 at the age of 6 she took 5th in the state of Virginia in the Youth Division at the Western Regional Big Game Show with a gobbler she harvested with a 22 Hornet rifle. She has a total of 6 turkey kills to her credit thus far, including the 2 she took this spring.

In the spring of 2014 Jordan was at the top of her game. On opening day Jordan and her father sat up on a gobbler that they heard in the distance and after some back and forth dialogue 3 toms appeared and Jordan capitalized on the one closest to her at 20yrds with her 20 gauge shotgun.

Throughout the season Jordan and her father continued their gobbler pursuit, but one bird in particular continued to ellude them. On 5 different occasions they called to the bird from a vantage point above him in a hollow that he frequented and each time received responses, but the bird would never commit. Jordan affectionately named this gobbler "Phantom" because of it's ability to be seen then disappear again into the woods as if it were make believe.

On the morning of May 10th before they headed out after Phantom Jordan told her father that this time they needed to go against traditional turkey strategy of hunting from above him and hunt this gobbler from the bottom of the hollow where he always appeared.

When daybreak came the 2 hunters were set up in their double bull blind in their newly chosen spot and right on que the ole tom sounded off. They also decided to adopt a different startegy of calling to Phantom. Each time the bird responded to their hen calls Jordan's father would also double gobble back at him. Phantom's curiosity got the best of him and after several double gobble sequences he came in hot with his red head glowing and Jordan put her 20 gauge to good use dropping the old warrior in his tracks!

To me as a outdoor writer there is nothing more satisfying then covering and sharing a great story like Jordans with our hunting community. In a world of fast pace and technology it is very refreshing to know that there are kids like Jordan who are still being raised to enjoy and respect what mother nature has to offer. Star City Whitetails looks forward to continuing to follow this young hunters success in the upcoming years and I encourage each one of you to get kids involved in our Great Outdoors!
