THE DIVINE INTERVENTION BUCK

Having been part of Brent Boney's great Virginia buck journey in 2016-17 there wasn't anyway that I would miss the chance to cover his daughter McKaley Boney's big buck harvest of November 2017.  Especially given the coincidental events that took place in each of these hunts.

If you recall it was McKaley that was part of the dog driving force behind Brent's harvest during the 2016 season.   McKaley picked up a few of the dogs that had run astray during the hunt and dropped them back near Brent's stand and his 210 6/8 B&C buck came running by him.

When the 2017 season began McKaley really wanted a chance at a big buck and subsequently she had passed on multiple marginal bucks during the bow and muzzleloader seasons.  Well, on Saturday November 18th opening day of rifle season, opportunity presented itself and she capitalized.  McKaley is no stranger to hunting, although she is just 19 years old she has been hunting with her father since she was eight. She harvested her first deer at age 11. Brent told me "I raised her up like a boy, but she hunts like a man"!

On the morning of November 18th McKaley, Brent and his son Daniel met the other members of the Round Hill Hunt Club at their leased property just before daylight.  As tradition has it the hunt club members draw marked pennies from a hat to decide stand placement for the morning hunt. McKaley drew number 2,  Brent 11 and Daniel 12.  Although McKaley had second pick she generously traded with Daniel because he doesn't hunt as often. McKaley already had a wildcard stand in mind that is rarely hunted by anyone other than her father.

Once the members had chosen their stands they sat out to their respective destinations. Brent chose a stand close to his son and just moments after settling in to his spot his phone rang.  It was McKaley who in a frantic voice had just encountered a strange man in the woods on the way to her stand who wasn't wearing orange and was sitting on a log disheveled and crying and claimed to be lost. Brent told his daughter to return to the truck and drive to his location and she would hunt his stand.   On her way out she reported the strange encounter to another member who found the man and escorted him off the property. Once McKaley arrived at Brent's stand he returned to the truck to wait out the hunt as all the stands were taken.

The dog drivers were then ordered to turn the hounds loose.  Within 5 minutes the dog's pitch changed, they jumped a deer.  As divine intervention would have it the buck they jumped ran in McKaley's direction.  She quickly fired 2 shots from her Beneli Super 90 loaded with 00 buck shot.  A short time later she came on her hand held radio and reported that she'd just missed a huge buck.  Brent said he could tell by the tone of her voice that it must have been a really nice buck.  He immediately ran towards her stand that was closest to the truck.  When Brent met up with his daughter she was shaken and said, "Daddy, he was huge and real wide!".

About that time the dogs that were following the buck appeared and continued on the deer's trail for about 3 minutes then silence. Brent looked at McKaley and said, "You didn't miss that deer", plus he knew she was a good shot.  The pair headed towards where they'd last heard the dogs. As they approached they observed the dogs surrounding a small pond of water.   Once to the pond they saw the buck expired in the water. McKaley instantly jumped in the water and pulled the big buck's head up from it's submerged position. At that moment with water dripping from the tremendous rack, Brent said he was more proud than when he took his record breaking "Greensville Ghost" buck the year prior. Brent and McKaley's bucks are synonymous with greatness but the memories made and these special moments they shared as father and daughter are the greatest gift they could receive.

None of the Round Hill Hunt Club trail camera's had captured pictures of this great buck, but some hunters on adjacent properties shared pictures of this buck with McKaley after finding out about her harvest.

This buck is 23 1/2" wide and has 11 scoreable points.

Congratulations McKaley on a great Va Buck and a great story!
