A TRUE VIRGINIA BOWHUNTER

Most big buck harvests boil down to the hunter being at the right place at the right time, but Nick Nixon of Goochland County Virginia relies on his preperation, time spent scouting and attention to details to put him in the right place far too often to consider it luck.

This year-round bow hunter has managed to to harvest 8 Pope & Young bucks over the last 22 years in Virginia, including this 9pnt buck that he arrowed on Tuesday evening 12/1/15 that green scores 132.

Up until December Nick's season had not gone as planned. Matter of fact he was licking his wounds for having missed a huge buck in mid November when he shot just under the animal, but as most good hunter's do he remained positive and continued to hunt hard.

During our conversation I quickly realized that this hunter genuinely earns these great Virginia deer that he takes. I could sense the drive and passion that he has for hunting big whitetails through the tone of his voice.

Sometimes a successful hunter can be very hesitant to share their tactics, but Nick was very comfortable talking about the things that help him have success when it comes to taking these big bucks with a bow.

* He always uses a climbing stand so that he can adjust to changing conditions

* He typically climbs 30 feet off the ground to bow hunt

* He finds where the does are bedding and hunts close by

* He really likes to hunt the last quarter moon phase after the full moon

* Always passes lesser, non mature bucks(passed 16 bucks this year)

* He does a lot of rattling, most of his bucks were taken using this method

* He regularly practices shooting his bow up to 100 yards

* He often hunts thick transition zones and always pays mind to the wind direction

I came away from our conversation feeling inspired by this humble hunter who continued to say that he felt blessed by each encounter he has had with these great bucks, but I know that Nick's success comes mostly from his discipline and diligence and of course his passion for the sport.

OH, there is one more huge contributing factor that Nick gives credit for his success, and that is his wife Michelle. He told me "without her support none of this would be possible", because as you can imagine in order to take these types of bucks you cant just be a weekend hunter.

Below I have included pictures of some bucks that Nick has taken over the years as well as a picture of his father Jerry Nixon who also harvested a big 9pnt buck with his rifle in Buckingham County the very same evening that Nick arrowed his 9pnt buck. The two were texting each other around 5pm saying that neither had seen anything then within 10 minutes each had harvested great Virginia Whitetails!
